Hmmmm. When I read the start I figured you had a PC but then you say iPad. You're not using an iPad with a PC, are you? I'm fully invested in Apple and one thing that's trivial is updating - the thing that you say is causing you grief. You can just duplicate your old machine onto the new. And when you say not to mention iCloud - do you have more than 2 TB of storage needs? That's how big my icloud storage is and it accommodates a lot of files. My entire computer, in fact. SuperDuper copies everything onto a SSD drive in seconds as backup and my documents file is continuously synched with the cloud. I guess my main point is that perhaps some alterations in your system would improve life for you as far as tech issues.
It's all apple tech but each device is a different age and ios and that's on purpose. Partly because the cloud version of psd not only makes me crazy but messes up my files and often saves them without correct slugs making them unreadable unless i go in and manually add slugs like .psd or .jpg to each stupid file. The comics I work on for the syndicates start on the ipad pro and then move to the old desktop running CS3 for finishing because, for the work I do, CS3 is actually superior to the cloud version. Plus it burns me up that I can't work on my files - or even open photoshop - without internet access. But that's a rant for a different day. Another part of the problem is I continue to use a variety of ipads for different accounts like the college and university where I teach and all those devices contribute to my cloud storage isssues. One of my big goals this year is to get as much out of the cloud as possible and onto backup hard drives. But moving the files takes a long time because I can't just dump them but have put them in specific folders for later. Some of these headaches are of my own making but I still hate how every update to every app and software takes away my favorite features and adds things I hate. Right now I'm forced to use the newest version of procreate on the new ipad and the thing where every time I choose a color procreate sets that pallette as a default is driving me crazy. Not an issue on my old unit so I may go back to it after I get the glass fixed. But I had no time - files were due and I needed a working unit asap :-)
Well, we have different setups, clearly. I only use PS on my laptop, which is my primary computer. And they're all updated because, in spite of that causing problems until the developers catch up, it's the only way to be maximally secure against cyber baddies. Backing up regularly is trivially easy if you keep SuperDuper on your computer and an SSD device plugged in. Can use TimeMachine as well. I keep multiple iPads as well - one that's not cloud connected so it stays "clean" of any foreign interference.
He got about 80 percent of that one :-) And I'm guessing there will be at least three more from this year's crop! Yes, he does amazing work - his talents are limitless!

Yay for hubby! And boo to tech. And yay for pies!
It all looks gorgeous. Those brick path are beautiful! Well done, John! I think he deserves a whole apple pie to himself!
