Issue #44 Rom Com Redux And The Secret Life Of Plants
I admit it.
I’m a huge fan of the movie “Sleepless in Seattle”.
But when I watched the film again last night, I suddenly saw something a little differently.
What is wrong with me that it has taken all this time to care about poor Walter?
I mean, here is this great guy (yes I know he’s allergic to everything under the sun and sleeps with 12 boxes of tissues by the bed but he can’t really help that, can he?) who thinks he’s found the love of his life and one night, during dinner, his world collapses.
And, I might add, it collapses after spending an incredible day with a fiancé who has told him his grandmother’s ring is “perfect”. The two of them are in eerily psychic agreement over the china and all their other wedding planning details.
Talk about blind sided.
When you think about it, the movie works pretty hard to establish just what a perfect match Annie and Walter are. We never see them quarrel or get on each other’s nerves. Annie has even bought into all the allergies - potentially lethal anaphylactic shock lurking around every corner doesn’t seem to phase her a bit.
So why is Annie so hell-bent on hooking up with Sam?
Is it truly that she is looking for “magic”?
Or might the real reason be simple competition? The fact that every other woman in the country is trying to get him?
It led me to a brainstorm.
There’s a blockbluster fan fiction novel just waiting to be written about Walter and his life after Annie.
What if Walter not only dodged a bullet (by not marrying the crazy lady who falls in love over the radio) but went on to find an amazing partner. Someone who thinks he is the most wonderful guy on the planet.
She’s gorgeous and funny and smart and she and Walter become a glittering power couple in the publishing world .
When Walter and his wife meet Annie years later at a fancy literary event, Annie has become a desperately lonely alcoholic unable to handle Sam’s many affairs with the women from all over the country who just won’t stop writing to him.
I don’t have the time to write this little gem but you, dear reader, are welcome to the idea.
I’ll only ask for 15% when you make your millions off it.

Return Of The Garden
And just like that, Spring is quietly springing in my front yard. I can always count on the crocuses and daffodils to start peeking up in February and remind me that gardening tasks are right around the corner.
