Issue #39 Knitting Confessions
That was confession number one.
Confession Two
Yes, this is true.
One Christmas my son opened a box containing unattached cardigan bits. And nary a sleeve in sight.
My stepfather-in-law was once gifted a single completed mitten and a ball of yarn.
And someone else – I can’t remember who – was the unfortunate recipient of four balls of yarn and a picture of a scarf.
I’m not proud of these moments.
I don’t know if they represent a failure of time management or my irrepressibly optimistic belief that a task which requires thirty hours to complete can be miraculously done by me in only seven.
It’s probably that second one.
A person can only knit so fast.
Unless they have superpowers.
Which I don’t.
But I seem to forget that when planning my gift-making schedule.
Thankfully there are wonderful people in my life who understand this little failing and are even amused by it rather than insulted.
My son was especially kind.
And he did ultimately wind up with a completed sweater.
The fact that it was six months after Christmas didn’t seem to bother him too much and I’m lucky about that too.
Sad to say, it is also true that if you are in possession of anything knit by me, you also possess a little of my DNA.
And perhaps also the DNA of whatever dog we had at the time.
There’s a lot of shedding in our house and, hard as I try, I can’t seem to keep the extra hair out of the knitting.
Or, actually, my jigsaw puzzles. That one baffles me. But every time I disassemble a jigsaw puzzle so as to return it to its cardboard home, I find bits of my hair stuck between the pieces.
Sorry if that’s a little more than you wanted to know.
If this creeps you out, and you no longer wish to wear that scarf I made you, returns are cheerfully accepted.

Here is how the cheesy potatoes are SUPPOSED to come out (see newsletter 38 for the Christmas potato disaster story)
These are in a small casserole dish rather than a 9 x 13 but that just means adjusting the recipe down a bit - less half and half and a bit less potatoes.
If you missed them before and want to try this delicious casserole the recipe is at this link.
