What do you give up for Lent?
Actually, do you give up anything for Lent?
For the first 15 years of my life I would describe the religious environment in our home as “vaguely Presbyterian” with emphasis on the “vaguely” part. My dad grew up as nothing and my mom grew up as Presbyterian so I guess they just went with the default setting.
But we didn’t go very often and, when we did, I don’t remember there being much fuss about Lent. I certainly don’t remember anyone giving anything up for it.
My sophomore year of High School I got yanked out of the drug addled public school I was attending and shuttled over to the Lutheran High School and “Hey, Presto!” we became Lutherans.
And Lutherans, apparently, gave things up for Lent. Which confused me because I always sort of thought it was just a Catholic thing.
I’ll be honest, I was, and still am, a pretty vague observer of Lent, and am completely uninterested in depriving myself of things I like.
Like Chocolate.
A lot of people give up Chocolate.
I have a need to succeed so I’ll be keeping the chocolate, thank you very much.
Giving up kale seems much more my speed.
I know, I’m missing the point of the whole thing.
But that’s how I roll….
