Issue #17 Don't Judge Me. Please.
I Swear…
Looking at my garden, the casual observer might get the wrong impression…
I admit to having problems but drinking too much is not one of them.
No, we used to have parties.
BIG parties.
Often, in the aftermath and cleanup, there would be a really interestingly constructed wine bottle that I decided to keep.
And sometimes I just held on to bottles to remind me of the special gathering.
They were then relegated to a shelf in the basement where, while sentimental, the bottles contributed nothing more productive than a gathering of dust and cobwebs.
At some point “bottle trees” started popping up all around town. And I realized my collection could be an artistic addition to the garden.
But, of course, I was compelled to make them even more artistic.
So I decided to paint them.
And, instead of grouping them all together, to scatter them all over the back yard.
This particular row is dedicated to preventing the big dents and cracks in the rear bumper of my van that result when I accidentally back into my fence during three point turns. Which I did at least twice before having the bright idea that the bottles could give me a higher sight line.
I did a lot of experimenting to find the right kind of paint and even wrote a whole big blog post about it. If you would like tips for painting your own decorative bottles click here and here.
One of the really great things about painting wine bottles is that you don’t need any particularly advanced level of talent. Dots, circles, squiggles, zigzags - it all works.
Just understand that a garden full of pretty bottles may send your neighbors an unintended signal :-)

Cherry Season
I can’t remember how long ago we planted our dwarf sour cherry tree - I think it’s at least 16 years old - but it has been a reliable source of pie cherries year after year. This will probably be a pie week. Or, at the very least, some jam.
