Issue #14 Good Intentions
The Road To Hell Is Paved With…
It seems to happen every year.
Round about April we emerge from winter storage to take stock of the outside of our house and surrounding property only to find that time and weather have not been kind.
Paint is flaking, mortar is crumbling and heading south, window frames are rotting and fences are leaning.
Thus begins the cataloguing of projects and improvements that require warm weather for successful execution.
No matter the length of this list, in April, everything seems completely do-able.
This is partly because we have it in our heads that summer and warm weather last at least 6 weeks longer than they actually do.
And that there will be no rain and no high winds.
We also labor under the delusion that, somehow, magically, our summer work schedule is different from our workload the rest of the year.
It isn’t.
Which is why, come a sunny mid-September morning we awake with the sudden realization that we have done exactly nothing and only have three warm-ish weeks left to do EVERYTHING.
Since I wrote this poem in 2018, we actually have repaired sixty percent of the backyard fence - the one that spent 2 years being held together by ropes tied to surrounding trees.
We have committed to fixing the rest of it before the snow flies.
Place your bets.

From The Garden
When we moved here many years ago there was a struggling remnant of a Mock Orange tree. We probably should have yanked it because it is straddling the property line and therefore likely to be illegal. But it smells so wonderful every June and I’ve never seen another here in our town. So we have kept it. I do hack it back from time to time after it is done blooming so that it doesn’t eat the car. I’ll probably do that next week.
